Cody's Maze is based on the gloomy tragedy of Cody, a robot who was abandoned inside a maze. Your mission is to help the little robot escaping the maze. The clue about this: There is absolutely no light inside the maze. There is only an old, rusty lantern inside the center, where Cody lives. Help him escaping the maze!

The Game Jams Theme: "3... 2.. 1."

I've implemented this theme in two major ways. First: there are three ways that seem to lead out of the maze. But only two of them are really usable. And as if that was not enough, only one of the three possible exits is open.

The second implementation is the light of little Cody. As there is complete darkness inside the maze, Cody has a small headlamp, which is powered by batteries. However, he can only carry three batteries and each battery only provides power for three seconds. As soon as the batteries are dead, your head lamp is powered by emergency power, which decreases the light intensity and radius. To restore your power, find batteries inside the maze.

Game Instructions

The mechanics of Cody's Maze are pretty forward. Move with WASD and use the number keys "1", "2", "3" to use the item you have in the related slot. There are three available items in the game:

  • Batteries - Restore your batteries.
  • Flashlight - Temporarily increases your light radius and intensity. While this item is active, your batteries will not decay.
  • Spyglass - A rare-ish item. This does the same as a flashlight with the addition that your camera zooms out and you can see more. To balance this item a bit, while the spyglass is active, you cannot move. So enjoy the view, I guess.

Your goal is to find the exit of the maze. Yes, the exit. While the maze has three potential exits, only one is active. The other two will be blocked by a plank. The one that is open is randomized with every run you play.

Final Words

This is the first game jam I have competed in. Or let's not say competed: Let's say taken part of. I don't see this as a competition, I see it as a great opportunity to learn more about game development and to get inspiration on how other people think about a given topic.

I would really, really, really, appreciate it, if you would give feedback, so that I know what to work on for the next game I make. I appreciate every feedback, as long as it helps me improving my work in any way.

Thank you.
